Frequently Asked Questions

We generally recommend children begin music lessons from around 5–6 years of age, provided they are interested, ready to learn, and able to engage in a structured lesson. Every child develops differently, so we're always happy to discuss whether they're ready to get started.
It's also important to remember that it's never too late to learn an instrument. Many students begin between 9 and 12 years old, which can actually be an excellent age to start. At this stage, children are often more independent, motivated, and able to take ownership of their learning.
Likewise, plenty of students don't begin until high school. We've seen many older beginners make outstanding progress because they've discovered an instrument they're genuinely passionate about and are motivated to succeed.

The best instrument is usually the one your child is excited to play. A student's interests, age, physical development, and personality all play a role in finding the right fit, and we're always happy to provide guidance.
Some instruments may require a slightly different starting pathway. For example, students interested in flute, clarinet, or saxophone may benefit from beginning on the recorder, particularly when they're younger, as it helps develop many of the same musical and breathing skills before moving onto a larger instrument. Likewise, younger students wanting to learn larger brass instruments such as euphonium or tuba often begin on a cornet or a lightweight plastic pCornet, allowing them to develop their embouchure and technique before progressing to a larger instrument.
Many instruments are now available in student-sized or lightweight models, including plastic brass instruments, making it possible for younger children to begin earlier than ever before.
While piano is a fantastic foundation instrument and many students enjoy starting there, it isn't necessarily the best choice for everyone. Some children find the coordination required for piano quite challenging and may be more engaged learning an instrument that better suits their interests and strengths. There is no single "right" instrument to begin with and we are happy to help you find the option that gives your child the best chance of success and enjoyment.

For piano lessons, a piano or keyboard is provided during the lesson, so students do not need to bring an instrument. However, they will need access to a piano or keyboard at home to practise between lessons.
For brass, woodwind, guitar, ukulele, strings, and most other instruments, students are expected to bring their own instrument to each lesson.
We have a small range of brass instruments available for hire, and we're always happy to provide advice on purchasing or hiring an instrument that suits your child's age, needs, and budget.

Group lessons are $25 + GST per student, per lesson.
Lessons are taught during the school term only, with each term typically running for 9–11 weeks, depending on the school calendar. Lesson fees are invoiced at the beginning of each term and are payable in advance.
We understand that paying a full term upfront isn't always possible, so payment plans may be available on a case-by-case basis. Please contact us before your invoice due date if you would like to discuss this.
A 10% late payment fee may be applied to accounts that remain unpaid after the second lesson of the term, unless a payment arrangement has been agreed to in advance.

If we have availability, students are welcome to begin lessons during the term. However, most students start at the beginning of a new school term, as tutors' schedules are generally planned around term enrolments.
If your child starts partway through the term, lesson fees will simply be adjusted to reflect the remaining weeks.
-
As lesson times are reserved exclusively for each student, missed lessons are generally not refundable or transferable. If a tutor is unable to teach, a make-up lesson or credit will always be provided in accordance with our Terms and Conditions.

Regular practice is one of the most important factors in a student's progress. For beginners, 15–20 minutes of practice is often a great starting point, helping students build good habits without becoming overwhelmed.
As students become more experienced, we find the ideal amount of practice is around 25–35 minutes each day. However, every student is different, and the right amount of practice depends on their age, goals, motivation, and other commitments outside of music.
As a general guide, we recommend students practise at least four times per week in addition to their weekly lesson.
Remember, practice doesn't have to happen all at once. For many younger students, two 10-minute sessions throughout the day can be just as effective as one longer session. The key is making practice a consistent and achievable part of their weekly routine, while still keeping music enjoyable.

Yes. Throughout the year, students may have opportunities to perform in concerts, school events, community performances, and other musical activities. Participation is always encouraged but never compulsory, as we understand every student has different goals and confidence levels.
